The characters were sorta based on my hand drawn avatar from the Thank You Animation. Sketched up and then traced in Illustrator to be used as splines in Cinema 4D. Keeping the splines active and animating their points helped speed up production, because I didn’t have to create and swap out unique shapes all day.
The paper shader is just a nice normal map, with high roughness. Soft lighting at visually appealing angles worked best - my initial straight ahead lighting made everything look too artificial. I opted for this over the sharp and short drop shadows I was going for originally. I also heavily relied on Redshift's Color User Data node to shade the different objects based on their Display Colour.
This was building on top of paper shader work I did way back when with Physical Render in Cinema 4D.
